Global Youth Action Network Calls On Young People To Achieve Millenium Development Goals

The United Nations Millennium Campaign, Global Youth Action Network and TakingITGlobal announce the release of the MDG Youth Campaign Kit, designed to engage young people in efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW YORK, New York / PR FREE / Nov 12 2005 --
The United Nations Millennium Campaign is calling on the young people of the world to play their part to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

"Tomorrow’s world is defined today and we need young people’s voice now," noted Eveline Herfkens, Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Millennium Campaign. "Youth are not just the future, youth are the present, and we need them to get the Millennium Development Goals back on track.”

At the Millennium Summit in 2000, a major breakthrough was reached when 189 Heads of State and Governments assembled together at the United Nations and pledged to make a better world for all by 2015.

They adopted the eight Millennium Development Goals, committing both rich and poor countries to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, ensure all boys and girls complete primary school, promote gender equality, protect the environment and reverse the spread of HIV and AIDS.

The Millennium Campaign was formed by the United Nations Secretary General to support citizens’ efforts to hold their governments to account for their promises to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

Realizing the role of young people as critical to realize the MDGs, the Millennium Campaign began working closely with youth-led organizations in order to engage a broad constituency of youth in the global fight against poverty.

In collaboration with the Global Youth Action Network (GYAN) and TakingITGlobal (TIG), the Campaign developed a MDG Youth Campaign Kit. The kit was distributed worldwide in October 2005. It provides a basic framework for young people to create their own advocacy campaigns around MDG issues that are important to their lives.

“Our aim is to support young people in strengthening the efforts of the campaign through a combination of on the ground activities and interactive online features,” said Jennifer Corriero, executive director of TakingITGlobal.

Thousands of MDG Youth Campaign Kits have been distributed in over 180 countries. The partnering agencies hope this will provide young people with information on engaging in advocacy efforts under way in their country. They also hope to create projects that will contribute to achieving the MDGs.

Next year, National MDG Youth Campaigns will get off the ground in 30 priority countries identified by the the Millennium Campaign. This will galvanize the efforts and voices of young people in those countries through a comprehensive strategy.

“Tens of thousands of young people are already addressing critical issues identified in the Millennium Development Goals—yet they are not aware of the context, because there is simply not enough public awareness about them,” said Benjamin Quinto, GYAN’s executive director. “We intend to connect up a movement, to ensure young people are at the forefront of efforts to achieve the MDGs.”
